Emergency Medicine
Dr Kenneth Heng, Emergency Medicine
Most Emergency Physicians are drawn to the specialty because of the exciting and varied clinical work, flexibility and lifestyle. Emergency physicians are the true generalists who manage problems across the whole age spectrum. They are resuscitation leaders and coordinators of acute care who are proficient in a wide range of resuscitative skills.
A graduate of the Emergency Medicine (EM) residency will have experienced a 5 year apprenticeship that covers not only the essential topics of emergency medicine, but incorporates many other aspects including pre-hospital and disaster medicine, observational medicine, communication and teaching skills, department management, simulation, ultrasound and much more. A resident will rotate through medicine, cardiology, surgery, trauma, orthopaedics, anaesthesia, intensive care, paediatrics and emergency medicine and benefit from the integrated inter-department teaching. Built into our programme are preparatory courses to guide the resident through the intermediate MCEM examinations in residency year 3 and Exit Examinations in year 5.
Emergency Department at TTSH
Trauma at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, unique because of the system and location, is one of our strengths. We have the highest trauma and SCDF ambulance volume amongst all the hospitals in Singapore and there is plenty of rich clinical material. Through graduated responsibility, close supervision and mentoring by established and much sought-after teachers, supported by a great bunch of fun and friendly nurses, our programme is committed to graduating competent, confident emergency physicians.
