General Surgery

Dr Terence Huey (2nd year Registrar, Department of Surgery)

Dr Terence Huey from NUS and completed his Basic Specialist Training in General Surgery and has received his Membership to the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh). He serves with distinction and pride as a Registrar pursuing further postgraduate training and Advanced Specialist Training in the Department of General Surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

Despite his seemingly tender age which is further masked by his youthful countenance, Dr Huey boasts a wealth of knowledge and is amongst the most fervent and motivated junior educators in the department. He is a catalyst for his subalterns, and creates a dynamic environment where everyone is encouraged to actively participate in the management of patients. No one is left feeling unimportant or disparate from patient care when he is around, allowing for ample opportunity for accelerated individual growth. His dedication to this cause is clearly seen in his daily pursuit in providing supervised training for his juniors. Outside the hospital he is ever approachable as a mentor and friend, breeding great camaraderie amongst his colleagues. He is a fine example of a scholar, officer, doctor and gentleman.

Dr Chan Chung Yip (Consultant HPB Surgeon, Department of Surgery)

I feel like a complete idiot at times because my thoughts are so rudimentary and deficient, sometimes with the most basic of things, but Chung Yip has always been very encouraging and patient. He will remain approachable and take pains to explain very basic things which I believe will go a long way in future. He is somehow always very clear and focused in thought, making complex things seem more manageable, and is able to bring that across to those he is speaking with, be it patients, relatives, peers or students. He manages his patients soundly and gives the trainees under his charge the chance to learn and improve. Operating with Chung Yip is a pleasure as a trainee because you get a glimpse into how he thinks and also opportunities to perform various procedures under supervision.

Dr Jane Tan (Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, Department of Surgery)

Dr Jane Tan has been a Consultant with the Department of General Surgery, Tan Tock Seng Hospital since 2006. Dr. Tan is first and foremost an exceedingly competent doctor. Both in and out of the operating theatre, she handles the situations that arise, both foreseen and unforeseen, decisively and level-headedly. In these situations, it becomes clear that she possesses astute clinical acumen and has a wealth of knowledge, both of clinical procedures as well as the underlying basic science.

Yet, what makes Dr. Tan even more outstanding is her strength as a teacher. She is able to distill her knowledge and experience into a succinct response that is pitched at one’s level of understanding and relevant to one’s needs. This ability of hers as been demonstrated time and again, during instances ranging from responses to casual questions to Grand Ward Rounds. Dr. Tan also takes the learning of her team seriously, and makes time to do so during the daily ward rounds and even on the very busy post-take ones. She will point out the clinically significant aspects of the patient’s presentation, ask questions on the appropriate drug dosages and so on, just to ensure that her team members use the heavy work load as an opportunity to learn. Besides all the clinical teaching, she also takes care of her team’s welfare. Being the approachable person that she is, it is never difficult to confide in her and to seek her advice in all matters. Thus, with all these strengths as a doctor and a teacher, Dr. Tan is an ideal clinical mentor, and it is truly my good fortune that I am training under her during my first posting as a registrar.

Professor Low Cheng Hock (Senior Consultant, Department of Surgery) a.k.a Sir Prow Low

“Are you alright?”

This is the typical Prof Low greeting words that you will hear him saying almost everyday….

Prof Low is well-known in the surgical community for his utmost commitment in teaching and nurturing the younger generation of surgeons. I think as far as surgical education is concerned, Prof Low has created an amazing environment in our department for students and everyone else to learn. He does not only teach, but more importantly, set an excellent example for all of us to follow…I have been heavily influenced by this love for teaching that I have personally invested a lot of time and effort in teaching students, HOs and MOs, cos such is the culture in our department, that we are very proud of.

Someone once told me this quote: “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” I think this describes Prof Low more as a great teacher who inspires, more than anything else….”
