Dr Ken­neth Heng Wei Jian, Pro­gram Direc­tor, TTSH

Dr Ken­neth Heng is cur­rently a con­sul­tant emer­gency physi­cian at the Emer­gency Depart­ment, TTSH. He is the pro­gram direc­tor of the NHG Emer­gency Med­i­cine res­i­dency pro­gram. He grad­u­ated from the National Uni­ver­sity of Sin­ga­pore in 1994 and obtained Fel­low­ship of the Royal Col­lege of Sur­geons of Edin­burgh (A&E) in 2001. His main inter­est is in trauma epi­demi­ol­ogy and injury con­trol and he has done fel­low­ships at The Alfred Emer­gency and Trauma Cen­tre, Mel­bourne Aus­tralia in 2002 and Injury Research Cen­tre, Med­ical Col­lege of Wis­con­sin in 2005. He is actively involved in train­ing and has held posts as Chair­man of Emer­gency Med­i­cine Train­ing Work­group, Insti­tute of Med­ical Edu­ca­tion & Train­ing (IMET), Chair­man of TTSH Life Sup­port Train­ing Com­mit­tee and is a mem­ber of the Spe­cial­ist Train­ing Com­mit­tee in Emer­gency Med­i­cine. He was awarded best teacher in TTSH (senior cat­e­gory, sur­gi­cal divi­sion) in 2006.

A/Prof Tham Kum Ying, Core Fac­ulty Mem­ber, TTSH

A/Prof Tham Kum Ying grad­u­ated in 1988 with MBBS from the National Uni­ver­sity of Sin­ga­pore and obtained her FRCSEd (A&E) from the Royal Col­lege of Sur­geons of Edin­burgh, United King­dom in 1993 and FAMS, Acad­emy of Med­i­cine, Sin­ga­pore in 1999. A/Prof Tham has played a very active lead­er­ship role in enhanc­ing the teach­ing pro­grammes of med­ical stu­dents, house offi­cers and med­ical offi­cers ever since she came onboard as an Asso­ciate Dean in 2007. When A/Prof Tham was a senior lec­turer in 2003, she made impres­sive con­tri­bu­tions in the advance of edu­ca­tion and train­ing of med­ical stu­dents, med­ical offi­cer trainees, nurses as well as para­medics. Equipped with the Mas­ter of Sci­ence (MSc) in Train­ing and Human Resource Man­age­ment which she grad­u­ated with a Dis­tinc­tion from the Uni­ver­sity of Leices­ter, UK in 2006, she has moved on beyond her field of prac­tice and spe­cial­iza­tion in resus­ci­ta­tion, life sup­port skills, trauma and emer­gency med­i­cine, to be involved in cur­ricu­lum and course-ware devel­op­ment for e-learning and house officers-medical offi­cers core pro­ce­dures skills. She is a much sought after teacher, instruc­tor and lec­turer and is an excel­lent teacher who has con­stantly been voted as the best teacher. She has won the institution´s Top 10 Teach­ers Award in the recent two con­sec­u­tive years.

A/Prof Eil­lyne Seow, Core Fac­ulty Mem­ber, TTSH

Clin­i­cal Asso­ciate Pro­fes­sor (A/Prof) Eil­lyne Seow is one of the pio­neers in Emer­gency Med­i­cine in Sin­ga­pore. She received her med­ical degree in 1985 from the National Uni­ver­sity of Sin­ga­pore. She obtained her post basic degree in 1991 from the Royal Col­lege of Sur­geons, Edin­burgh and spent 7 months in the USA under an HMDP schol­ar­ship to sub­spe­cialise in pre­hos­pi­tal emer­gency medicine.

She became the Head of TTSH Emer­gency Depart­ment in 2001, a posi­tion she has held till now. She is also the Divi­sional Chair­man (Ambu­la­tory & Diag­nos­tic Med­i­cine). Since 1995, she has served at var­i­ous times on the national com­mit­tees on emer­gency med­i­cine train­ing, resus­ci­ta­tion, pre­hos­pi­tal emer­gency care, drug reha­bil­i­ta­tion review and emer­gency med­i­cine. She was the found­ing vice-president for the Soci­ety of Emer­gency Med­i­cine for Sin­ga­pore and was the Pres­i­dent of this soci­ety from 2004 to 2006. She was also a found­ing mem­ber on the Board of Direc­tors of the Asian Soci­ety of Emer­gency Med­i­cine and held var­i­ous posts till March 2009.

She is a pop­u­lar and sought-after teacher and has not only per­son­ally nur­tured all the emer­gency physi­cians in TTSH, she has also been inte­gral in train­ing Brunei’s first emer­gency physician.

She is inter­na­tion­ally renowned and has been an invited speaker at regional and inter­na­tional meet­ings. Her pas­sion for teach­ing Emer­gency Med­i­cine has led her to spear­head numer­ous out­reach projects in Malaysia, Cam­bo­dia, Brunei and Thai­land. She has pub­lished papers on pre­hos­pi­tal emer­gency care, fam­ily vio­lence, trauma, infec­tious dis­ease out­breaks, health ser­vices research and emer­gency depart­ment man­age­ment. She has authored and con­tributed to emer­gency med­i­cine textbooks.

Dr Phua Dong Haur, Core Faculty Member, TTSH

Dr Phua Dong Haur, Core Fac­ulty Mem­ber, TTSH

Dr Phua Dong Haur grad­u­ated from the fac­ulty of med­i­cine, National Uni­ver­sity of Sin­ga­pore in 1999. He obtained mem­ber­ship of the Royal Col­lege of Sur­geons of Edin­burgh (A/E) in 2003 and Mas­ter of Med­i­cine (A/E) in 2005 and Fel­low of the Acad­emy of Med­i­cine of Sin­ga­pore in 2006. He trained in clin­i­cal tox­i­col­ogy and is par­tic­u­larly inter­ested in plant and herbal poi­son­ing. His other inter­ests include clin­i­cal decision-making, resus­ci­ta­tion and elderly mis­treat­ment. He is actively involved in med­ical offi­cer train­ing and is respon­si­ble for revamp­ing the Emer­gency Department’s train­ing syl­labus. He was also one of the authors of the book “More than Meets The Eye — Cases from the Emer­gency Department”.
